Taxes and your 1099

If you clear the IRS threshold, Stripe issues your 1099-NEC automatically at year-end. No separate W-9, nothing to file to receive it.

If your payouts clear the IRS threshold, your 1099-NEC arrives automatically at year-end. Stripe issues it. There is no W-9 to fill out and mail us, and nothing to file to receive the form.

You earn the commission the brand sets, in full. The 20% platform fee is billed to the brand, so it is never taken out of your payout. The number on your 1099 is your real earnings, not a figure with a cut shaved off.

Who issues your 1099, and how

Stripe issues your 1099-NEC, not Harmonia. Because Stripe Connect already handles your payouts and holds your verified tax details, it is the one place that has everything the form needs.

  • Issued automatically. At year-end, Stripe generates your 1099-NEC if your total payouts clear the IRS threshold. You do not request it.
  • No separate W-9 step. The tax details Stripe needs are collected once, during identity verification. There is no separate W-9 to fill out later.
  • Harmonia never sees your SSN or bank details. Stripe holds your tax ID and account info. We never see or store them, and we never expose them to a brand.

Why Stripe and not us

Stripe Connect runs the payout rail and completed your identity verification, so it already holds the tax ID and the full payout total a 1099 needs. Routing the form through Stripe is also why we never have to ask you for your SSN.

For how that verification step works and why we use it, see identity verification and KYC.

What triggers a 1099

One thing decides whether you get a 1099: your total payouts for the year versus the IRS threshold.

  • Over the threshold: Stripe issues your 1099-NEC automatically.
  • Under the threshold: you usually will not receive one. The income can still be reportable, so check with a tax professional about your own situation.

The threshold is set by the IRS, not by Harmonia, and the IRS can change it. So we point you to current IRS guidance for the exact figure rather than print a number here that could go out of date. Stripe tracks your running total against the current threshold for you.

Your payout history is your running total

The earnings that count toward the threshold are the payouts that reached you through Stripe. Your wallet shows what has been paid. To see how a balance becomes a payout, see when and how you get paid.

What you do, and what we do

Here is the split, so it is clear how little is on you.

StepWho does itWhen
Provide tax detailsYou, once, during verificationAt payout setup, before your first payout
Track payouts against the thresholdStripeAll year, automatically
Issue the 1099-NECStripeAt year-end, if you clear the threshold

You do not file anything to Harmonia to receive your 1099. The only tax detail you provide is collected once, at verification, in the same flow that sets up your payouts.

Reading your 1099-NEC

A 1099-NEC reports nonemployee compensation: money you earned as an independent contractor, not as an employee. A few things to expect:

  • The amount is your gross payouts through Stripe for the year.
  • It reflects the full commission you earned, since the 20% platform fee was billed to the brand and never deducted from you.
  • It is yours to report. We issue the form; we do not give tax advice. How you file it is between you and your tax professional.

Keep your details current

Stripe sends your 1099 to the information on file from verification. If your legal name, address, or tax ID changes during the year, update it in Stripe so the form is correct and reaches you.

FAQ

Will I get a 1099?

If your Harmonia payouts for the year clear the IRS threshold, yes. Stripe issues your 1099-NEC automatically at year-end. If your earnings are under the threshold, you usually will not get a 1099, but the income can still be reportable, so check with a tax professional. Either way, you do not have to request the form.

Do I need to submit a tax form?

No. You do not file anything to Harmonia to receive your 1099. The tax details Stripe needs are collected once during identity verification, the same step that sets up your payouts. There is no separate W-9 to fill out and send us.

What is the threshold?

It is the IRS reporting threshold for 1099-NEC nonemployee compensation, set by the IRS, not by Harmonia. Stripe tracks your total payouts against it and issues the form automatically if you clear it. Because the IRS can change the number, we point you to the current IRS guidance rather than print a figure that could go stale.
